Santa Barbara Arts

Tell us about yourself and your business.
I was an artist at the Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show in the late '80s selling my photography while a student at Brooks Institute, and I really enjoyed the experience. I then transitioned into selling at the YES Store, which was only open for six weeks throughout every holiday season. I started as a featured artist in the store and subsequently moved into management. It was so much fun for 14 years but was sad when we closed every year on Christmas eve. I thought SB needed a year-round venue for local artists; hence my husband and I opened Santa Barbara Arts in 2003.

What is the best part of owning a business in Santa Barbara?
I come from a diverse artisan family, and I have a kinship with artists. It's important to me to support local artists and help them in their artistic endeavors and dreams. Plus, being located in the most beautiful retail setting in downtown Santa Barbara, I meet people from all over the world. I have many regulars who just like to chat, and I love that, too. Also, I've made many lasting friendships through the store.

Santa Barbara is teeming with talent. How do you go about selecting artists and curating the gallery?
I get many requests from artists, and it's a difficult decision. Mainly I go with creativity. If there is a niche that isn't taken, originality, craftsmanship come into consideration, and I always love whimsey. Kindness also enters into the equation.

Is there something in the gallery that you are coveting right now?
I am honored to have carried James "Bud" Bottoms sculptures and jewelry for 13 years. We were on the same wavelength. Bud would come to every 1st Thursday gallery walk with his wax molds and demonstrate how a bronze sculpture was created. He loved to educate people about art and the environment. He was a true gentleman and definitely walked the walk.

What about Santa Barbara Arts makes you the proudest?
My heart is warmed several times a day when I hear, "This is my favorite store!" I am proud that we have such fabulous customer service. We offer complimentary gift wrapping and delivery. I am pleased to have a shop that brings a smile to people's faces.
