As Renaud Gonthier and his wife, Nicole, were working to open their pastry shop and restaurant in Santa Barbara, Renaud focused on one question: “What is it that a true French pastry shop would have?” Having been born, raised and trained as a pastry chef in France, he knew the answer. Croissants and brioche, those French breakfast standards, embody the care and quality that go into everything Renaud makes. His croissants are slightly crisp and flaky on the outside, with layers of ethereally light buttery dough within. Ditto the puffy little upright brioche; it’s a sweet, light, delicate indulgence. Breakfast choices include a stellar fried-egg sandwich with sautéed mushrooms, bacon, tomatoes and melted cheese served on homemade pain de mie. Three-egg omelets (just $9.75 with four fillings) are fluffy in the French style. A classic lunchtime Croque Monsieur feels new thanks to fine ingredients and a fussed-over béchamel sauce. And cheese ravioleties imported from Renaud’s home town are topped with a splash of cream and shaved Gruyère – superbe! There’s much more, including the labor-intensive petit gateaux (small cakes), along with tarts, macarons, eclairs, mille feuille and custom cakes that Renaud creates daily.

Did know a croissant could taste this good
I don't consider myself a foodie at all, so when I get above average food I am really awed and wonder how someone can make it taste so good. So this is how I felt when I finally had the best croissant in the world. I never really understood what the big deal about a croissant was. Lots of butter, that is calories to me, without the the pleasure to make it worth it. Well, I just never had a croissant worth it. Now I will be doing an extra 10 minutes at the gym so I can enjoy these scrumptious delights enjoying every bite.

Unbelievable croissants
My whole family loves this place. The almond croissants are incredible, never had anything like them before. We go here to treat the whole family and all the kids get so excited when we go. Don't change anything, ever.

Outrageously tasty croissants
My daughter and I had a wonderful lunch here together. I ordered the beef sandwich and she ordered the chicken sandwich. Both were excellent and served with a fresh side salad with a superb dressing. We had a great time, enjoyed the food and spilt a delicious mouse dessert that was not too heavy and just enough. Would highly recommend to anyone who likes good food. And the croissants were unbelievable!
