“Classic” is a word that gets thrown around a lot, but while ersatz classics abound, genuine classics endure. Diners seeking a real-deal, here-to-stay steakhouse in our neck of the woods need look no further than Lucky’s.

Since opening its doors in 2000, this lively and welcoming Montecito restaurant has faithfully and authentically embodied the time-honored attributes of this much-loved niche in American gastronomy. “The idea was to create a classic American steakhouse in terms of the menu and the feeling of the place, says general manager and executive chef Leonard Schwartz. Since coming to Lucky’s in 2007, the former chef-owner of Maple Drive in Beverly Hills and executive chef at 72 Market Street in Venice Beach has honored and extended that vision.

Diners experience it the moment they step from Coast Village Road into a handsome dining room that oozes timeless appeal. White-linen tablecloths drape tables surrounded by stylish wood-and-leather chairs. Dark-wood wainscoting contrasts with cream-colored walls adorned with vintage photographs of sports stars and movie celebrities from the 1940s and ’50s. Fireplaces warm the main dining room and the patio, a canvas-covered space just off the big wood bar, which itself is a gleaming antique remnant from the restaurant’s previous incarnation.

Classic bones, classic décor and, of course, classic steakhouse faire, which has evolved with verve and restraint in Schwartz’s capable hands.

These days, the foundational USDA prime steaks (including a bone-on filet mignon and a divide-and-conquer 24-ounce Porterhouse masterpiece) are supplemented by an expanded range of superb fresh seafood (the seared ahi tuna is a favorite), a collection of entrée salads (including one that stars the house specialty, steak) and a hit parade of comfort-food “plats du jour.” Ranging from Monday’s chicken pot pie to Tuesday’s Market Street meatloaf (which earned Schwartz wide acclaim in Venice) to Friday’s delectable braised short ribs, these delicious additions extend the menu by bringing top quality to time-honored American standards.

The “skinny onion rings” are not to be missed, and those who consider “meat-and-potatoes” to be one word will find the noble spud in seven appealing guises to make their dinner complete.

In the highly visible wine cellar, fine old Bordeaux and Rhône reds rest beside big, meat-friendly Italian Barolos and Brunellos, a host of other international stars, and delicious domestic offerings from California and beyond. About a dozen wines are always available by the glass. With all the elements in place, what else befits a classic? Perhaps a streak of humbleness, an egalitarian attitude that makes long-time residents and temporary visitors feel equally at home and welcome. “We strive to create a high level of staff friendliness because we genuinely believe that every customer is a VIP,” says Schwartz.

Classic values, like classic steakhouses, stand the test of time.

Just the Best

My parents came in from out of town, so where else would I take them but to the best steakhouse in our town. Everything was just perfect, my parents loved everything about it. The pictures on the walls, the old time favorites on the menu, like creamed spinach. I tried it just for kicks and it was great. We are so LUCKY to have this place.

I am a tough critic, but

Ok so my son who lives in Santa Barbara wanted to take me to a restaurant that would impress me. Going up in San Francisco and coming from a family with generations of excellent Italian cookin, I am a little picky and not so forgiving of poor quality food. I am very happy to say, that Lucky's impressed me. Good job son, you learned well. Everything was the way I like it. Food was simple, great quality and very tasty. Service was impeccable. Engaging and right on the spot and knowledgeable. The ambiance - well I love photographers of old timers like myself on the walls. Great job Lucky's, I will be back.

Delicious

Friends of ours kept inviting us to come to Luckys for dinner, and we just never seemed up for the drive from the Valley. We finally went and were completely impressed with everything. Food was incredible, service top notch and loved the lively atmosphere. The is nothing even close to this kind of quality in the valley and we will be making this trip more often. Keep up the great work.

Yes, a lilttle pricey, but worth

We wanted to celebrate our anniversary at a special place and had heard the Lucky's is that kind of place. We were not pointed in the wrong direction. The food was great, but it was the service that poushed us over the top, friendly, helpful and always there we we wanted them. How do they do that? My wife and I always had a memorable time and Lucky's was a big part of that.

What a wonderful night

Good friends of ours joined us for a memorable dinner this weekend. They were from out of town so we wanted to treat them to a California experience, and the night was nothing short of superb. Our server was fun and energetic and knowledgeable about the menu and wines. She paired our food perfectly with a wine. The food was heavenly. Although an afterthought, we ordered the onion rings, and they were amazing. The crowd was buzzing and the whole night felt enchanting. Thanks Lucky's for showing our friends some Californian hospitality.

Birthday Celebration

Took the whole family for my wife's 45th birthday and what a fun time. Lucky's is all about the experience, and we have always been satisfied with that. Yes it is a little expensive for our budget, but the memories are worth it. The food was perfectly prepared and the service was always there when we needed and invisible when we didn't - perfect.
