Growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, Carlos Luna spent a lot of time around honest regional food. His grandmother owned one of the city’s many fondas, tiny restaurants that number in the dozens, open only at night and serve regional appetizers. When Carlos was older, he’d hang out with his friends who had opened their own restaurants. He got the bug, and when he came to the U.S. in 2006, his grandmother’s recipes in tow, he got busy and opened Los Agaves, a wonderful, nearly two-year-old addition to Santa Barbara’s thriving Mexican restaurant scene.

Tile floors, wood-and-tile tables and a paintings of Mexico, including a couple of large canvases featuring the namesake agave, the source of all tequila, bring a touch of Mexico to the casual, comfortable dining room. But it’s the food that completes the picture.

“Everything is made by hand daily, the tamales, the tortillas, the salsas,” says manager Jose Luis Jacobson, another Guadalajara native. “There are no preservatives, no MSG, no canned products, everything is made from scratch.” Good ingredients and careful cooking are reflected in a menu full of delicious regional dishes from central and southern Mexico, Puebla, Oaxaca and Guadalajara, in particular. Guests order at the counter, and their food is delivered to their table.

Specialties include chiles campestres, or farm-style, poblano chiles split lengthwise and stuffed with cheese and chicken, then oven-cooked in a jalapeño cream sauce. Another favorite is molcajetes, which is the name of a traditional lava-rock bowl and the dish prepared in it in Mexico City. At Los Agaves, the dish comprises sizzling pieces of either flank steak, shrimp, chicken or a combination, plus Mexican cheese, sausage, onions, avocado and salsa. Hot stuff! And representing Cancún and the Caribbean is the torta Havana, a kind of Cuban/Mexican ham and cheese sandwich on a semi-firm round roll.

The flautitas tapatias, one of Luna’s grandmother’s recipes, are similar to taquitos, with chicken or beef rolled up in tortillas, but the tortillas are coarser and offer a bigger hit of corn’s satisfying texture, crunch and flavor. “In Mexico, as all over Latin America, you go to a resturant to have a good time and relax with friends and family,” says Carlos. “You stay at the table for hours. We wanted this to be a place like that, where people can gather and have a good time in a relaxing and casual environment.”

As the restaurant begins to fill with locals at just past five o’clock, Carlos has to know that he’s accomplished what he set out to do.

Keeps getting better

My friends and I liked this place from the beginning, great food, cool atmosphere, reasonable prices and free chips. A no brainer. What I marvel at is that they keep on adding new and innovative items to the menu. Typically I will order something I had before and loved, but this place keeps adding great new items. Way to go, I love your creativity.

New menu items

My wife and I love this place and now we love it even more. They have added some new menu items that are outrageously tasty. We had the new prawns with pasilla chiles in a butter cram and spice sauce with rice and it was absolutely delicious. Can't wait to try the other new items.

Very Good

I had heard that this place was slipping a little bit and it looks like the previous reviewer had the same experience. Not sure if they had growing pains or something else, but all is good at my favorite Mexican food place. A group of friends all said it was great which is good to hear. The owner is a great guy and I want to see this guy succeed, and the serve the most flavorful Mexican food in town.

What happened to the food

This place has been my favorite Mexican food place for awhile, but the last time I was there is wasn't so good. I ordered the fish tacos and I felt like the old granny, saying where is the fish. The portion of fish was tiny, and not so good. My friends said that there food was good but not great. I hope this was bad night for them and that this isn't going to be the normal.

My new favorite Mexican restaurant

I heard about this place awhile ago, and finally made it there with a bunch of friends. Love the reviews of this place, great site. I ordered the los agaves enchiladas and they were amazing. Totally tasted that tropical mango flavor which made the meal delicious. All of my friends loved the food and the place is just fun. We will be back.

Amazing Fish Tacos

I had heard about Los Agaves so I decided to give it a try for a quick lunch. I had the halibut fish tacos and they were superb. The fish was cooked perfectly and the papaya cabbage salsa was a delicious compliment. A side salad and rice came with the dish. The rice was perfect as well, and the salad dressing was sublime. It had a papaya, cranberry flavor, but there was another ingredient that I could not identify. Whatever it is, it is amazing. The flavor was so good that I savored each bite. I consider myself a foodie, but not snooty at all. Love this place and will tell all my foodie friends.

Best Mexican Food in Santa Barbara

This is our new favorite Mexican food in Santa Barbara, which is quite a statement since we have so many. This place is leaps and bounds ahead of the pack and it is because the food is so unique. It must be owners Spanish influence and the sauces are incredible, very tropical tasting and imaginative dishes. We love this place and wish them great success.

Yummy Birthday Celebration

A bunch of our friends celebrated a couple of birthdays at this somewhat new restaurant and had a great time. The food was distinctly different than your typical mexican food and had a refreshing and tasty Yucatan presence. I heard that the the owner is from Guadalajara. I had the Agaves enchaladas and they were excellent. Halibut and shirmp with peppers and a delicious sauce that had just the right amount of kick and lots of flavor. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meals and the ambiance was great. A nice mixed crowd, and the place was packed. Highly recommend as our new favorite Mexican restaurant in town.

Great food at a good price

Had an excellent lunch with my girlfriends. The place is lively and fun without being stiff. THe food was really good and reasonable priced. I had the prawns with salmon on the pineapple that I saw in the Dining and Destinations magazine and it was tasty. This will be one of our new favorites.
